Introduction

Do you have a lot of patterned papers that you have difficulty finding the right project for? If so, this project will help you stretch creatively by getting you out of your comfort zone. You'll also end up well-stocked with a variety of notecards for future occasions! The envelopes are sized to hold a gift card and with a hanging loop at the top for hanging on a tree, on a doorknob, or anywhere you would like to surprise someone. They also make festive gift tags. I'm including instructions and a template for a box specially sized to hold twelve notecards - a set would make a great gift.

Tools and Materials

Downloaded template "Tiny Notecard Design Challenge Template"
Self-sticking laminating sheets
Scissors
12 different patterns of scrapbooking paper
Cardstock in complementary colors
Pencil
Glue stick
Small hole punch
Eyelets
Eyelet setter
Rubber stamps
Rubber stamping ink
Embroidery thread
Downloaded template "Tiny Notecard Box Template"
Chipboard
Scoring tool/bone folder
Double-sided tape
ColorBox Mica Magic ink, bronze, or similar ink or acrylic paint
Sponge
Decorative papers
Yes Glue
Old credit card

Make the Notecards
  1. Download the template "Tiny Notecard Design Challenge Template". Cut out the parts and laminate with self-sticking laminating sheets.

  2. Select 12 different patterns of paper that you don't use often, if at all. Place the tag envelope template on the back and trace around with a pencil. Cut out envelope and fold in tabs. Leave the tag top unfolded.

  3. Select cardstock in a complementary color to each envelope. Trace the 3.5 x 5" rectangle and tag top onto the cardstock and cut out.

  4. Fold the 3.5 x 5" rectangles in half to make tiny notecards. Use rubber stamps from your collection to create a design for the front of the notecard that complements each envelope. This will be even more challenging if you try to use different stamps on each one! You may have stamps in your collection that you seldom use or have never used - try to work some of those into your designs. Since I don't know what you have in your collection, I can't guide you any more than that in terms of designing, but below are some samples I made to help give you ideas.

  5. Stamp a circle stamp in a complementary color on the tag portion of the envelope - I used the circle from the set Faux Postage Shapes Set 2.

  6. Punch a hole in the middle of the circle with a small hole punch, and set an eyelet inside. Make a loop of complementary colors of embroidery thread, and tie off.

Make the Box
  1. Download the template "Tiny Notecard Box Template". Cut out the parts and laminate with self-sticking laminating sheets.

  2. Tiny Notecard Design Challenge
  3. Trace the box bottom and box lid onto chipboard and cut out. Score the seams that will be folded with a scoring tool.

  4. Put double sided tape on flaps and trim off any extra. Fold in tabs and press together to assemble box and lid.

  5. Sponge bronze ink or paint onto outside edges of box and lid.

  6. When ink is dry, tear decorative papers of your choice into strips. Using Yes Glue and an old credit card for spreading, glue paper pieces onto sides of box and lid to cover the exposed cardboard areas. You're done!
